We had a gang war in our Lansing, MI southside neighborhood and didn't know it
July 24, 2008
PLEASE NOTE: I USED MY FLIP VIDEO CAMERA TONIGHT AND WILL TRY TO UPLOAD IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Super-wife and I just got back from the Averill Woods Neighborhood Association meeting here in southwest Lansing, MI and we are disappointed in our city leaders, all the way from Mayor Virg Bernero to the Lansing State Journal, the Gannett-owned newspaper in our town.
More than 40 neighbors in our small residential preserve gathered to talk about growing concerns about crime in our area. Then it came out from two moms who live near the affected area that warring gangs gathered beside a neighborhood facility.
There was talk of gunshots and threats and an overwhelming response from regional police agencies. Gang participants scattered.
Now we heard nothing about it. We have our associations and there are nearby neighborhood groups. We heard nothing.
There was nothing in the State Journal. How would you know if the local police fail to give details and the local media fails to fill its historical role of keeping readers informed?
The kicker is that night super-wife and I were walking down to our neighborhood main drag and we saw 10 or 11 police cars scream down the street toward the affected area.
Details about what happened even the basics can't be shared Bernero said. It would interfere with police work.
Should I feel more safe with his explanation?
I don't.
